QuestionsCategory: GeneralNeighbors keep stopping by 'just to chat'. How can I politely decline their company?

I don’t want to sound too rude, but I have some very outgoing neighbours. They are slightly older than my husband and I and they regularly like to come by either together or one by one just to chat. They don’t have children (we do) and don’t seem to have much respect for the fact that we are short on time.

Last night for instance I was in a rush making dinner and feeding my two little ones and one of our neighbours popped by ostensibly to let us know that there was going to be roadwork going on in the morning. Not only do I not really care about random construction around the neighbourhood, but they stuck around for 20 minutes just randomly talking while I was trying to get back to my kids.

I don’t know if I’m just really bad at giving hints, or they are really bad at taking them, but how do I convince these people to leave me alone when I’m busy?
